Alo Chilaka Village

Sale price$21.50 USD

Alo Coffee was founded by Tamiru and his wife Messi, named after Tamiru’s home village Alo in Bensa, Sidama. Alongside working in coffee, Tamiru was also an electrical engineer and university professor. In 2020, the first Cup of Excellence competition was held in Ethiopia, and Tamiru won the 2021 competition with a beautiful, high altitude, carefully sorted natural from Alo Bensa. He has since traveled the world to grow his expertise in coffee and share his knowledge with other producers, and Alo has become an undeniable source of some of Ethiopia’s most unique and exceptional coffees. Last year, we had Alo’s beloved Morkie Anaerobic Natural, a 2025 Global Coffee Award winner and an easy favorite among our staff. We’re thrilled to carry Morkie again along with 2 more Alo coffees this year. Quantity is limited, so don’t miss out.

For this lot, cherries were immediately washed and depulped, leaving 5% of mucilage on for the drying stage. The beans were slow-dried for 10-15 days on raised beds under moderate sunlight. This coffee is smooth, sweet, and floral like a delicate yubari melon. A bright zest lingers in the finish.

Sorting Level

9.5-10%

All our roasted coffees are run through an AI-powered optical sorter. This extra step ensures that you receive only the most nutrient-dense, flavorful coffees from each lot. The machine is also capable of removing any foreign objects (corn, metals, rope, to name a few) from the rest of the coffees.

The higher the percentage, the more coffee is being removed in order to achieve a truly pristine product. We liken this to how sake-makers "polish" during production in order to reach a higher-quality product.

Nothing goes to waste: the rejected coffees are re-roasted and sold to local markets.
